Her story

Hilary is General Manager Legal – Corporate & Secretariat at AGL, one of Australia’s largest energy providers. With several years of private legal experience both in Australia and the UK, Hilary has established herself as a key figure in her industry.

Without mentioning your job title, how would you describe what it is you do now (whether at home, work, in the community, etc.)?

I work with the AGL business on its growth ambitions and provide commercial legal solutions to complex matters.

What are the first three words you think of when you hear the word ‘diversity’?

Inclusion, Value, Compassion.

What do you think it will take to develop truly diverse thinking within the legal industry?

We really need to stop and reflect on the real value that diverse thinking can bring to our profession and put in place processes so that we become much more collaborative. The law is very rarely black and white and people from a variety of backgrounds and with different life experiences offer different, and valuable, insights into legal matters and our profession.

What was your main driver to enter the legal industry?

I wasn’t very good at maths or science (and managed to avoid those subjects during my last year at High School), so that limited my options! I had always been interested in reading and thought doing a law degree would be a good way to indulge that interest. I also wanted to gain transferable skills that would allow me to work overseas and travel.
