Allison is the General Counsel at Ipswich City Council.
At work I support diverse internal business areas to navigate evolving legal and governance environments, and to deliver services efficiently, pragmatically, and strategically, whilst balancing public interest considerations such as transparency and probity. I am also focussed on fostering a welcoming, supportive, and safe work environment that supports team members to work in ways that work for them and supports their professional development and their development of positive and productive working relationships. Outside of work I am focussed on supporting my family to navigate its busy calendar of school and social commitments.
What are the first three words you think of when you hear the word ‘diversity’?
Recognition, Respect, Perspective.
What do you think it will take to develop truly diverse thinking within the legal industry?
Enhancement of flexible working practices - not just in terms of start/finish times and working locations, but also in terms of supporting employees to navigate different stages of life (e.g. parenting, caring for ageing parents, returning to study). Formal mentoring and skills development opportunities that are openly available to all employees who want to leverage them (at all stages of their careers). Frequent and formal technology training (to upskill and update employees and ensure ongoing relevancy in the workplace). Leadership commitment to creating safe spaces and equal opportunity.
What was your main driver to enter the legal industry?
I started out in planning law because I obtained dual undergraduate qualifications in urban and regional planning and law. I actually intended to eventually end up in the planning industry but when I started working in government I became involved in work across many different subject areas. This diversity of practise and experience has kept me engaged in the legal industry.
