Her story

Emma is the General Counsel & Company Secretary at Tri-Star Group.

Without mentioning your job title, how would you describe what it is you do now (whether at home, work, in the community, etc.)?

I oversee the legal and governance functions for a global resources company, ensuring compliance and strategic alignment across operations in Australia and the United States. Working with teams in both jurisdictions, I provide legal advice to support and enable informed decision making by management and our global board of directors.

What are the first three words you think of when you hear the word ‘diversity’?

Inclusion, representation, equity.

What do you think it will take to develop truly diverse thinking within the legal industry?

Removing financial and geographic barriers through scholarships and other initiatives such as flexible and remote work options.  Promoting innovation and challenging traditional practices in our industry, such as offering inclusive leadership training to ensure decision makers advocate for diversity from the top down and foster a supportive and safe environment for all to speak up.

What was your main driver to enter the legal industry?

I ended up in the legal industry almost by accident.  I had intended to study commerce, but my grades were good enough for law, so I went for it.  Once I started studying law I discovered I actually loved it, so what began as a practical choice quickly turned into a real passion, and I haven't looked back.
