Her story

Amy is the Chief Legal Officer/Company Secretary at Senex Energy.

Without mentioning your job title, how would you describe what it is you do now (whether at home, work, in the community, etc.)?

At work, I lead a team of legal, risk, governance and compliance professionals to support the operations of a Queensland based energy producer and to drive continual improvement in systems to help the business achieve its strategic objectives.

What are the first three words you think of when you hear the word ‘diversity’?

Curiosity; experiences; challenge.

What do you think it will take to develop truly diverse thinking within the legal industry?

From a private practice and inhouse perspective openness to employing and promoting persons from different backgrounds and experience is key.  Ultimately it is dependent on ensuring structures are in place to encourage a diverse range of persons to join, and build a successful career in, the industry.  It is also important to promote curiosity and provide opportunity for lawyers to gain experience beyond their chosen discipline e.g. through secondments; pro bono activities; leaves of absence to pursue experience overseas, further study or career breaks.

What was your main driver to enter the legal industry?

An interest in legal studies at school encouraged me to enrol in a dual degree - Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce.  I enjoyed the law subjects at University and the experience gained through summer clerkships which ultimately led me to apply for Articles of Clerkship.
