Legal Counsel
Noosa Shire Council
Krista is a Legal Counsel at Noosa Shire Council.
In local government it is certainly diverse. I handle most legal matters across council (think cemeteries, waste, roads, environment, sport facilities, events, art galleries, civil works...) to find commercial solutions in collaboration with the various teams often with both community and political pressures. My preference is to meet face-to-face initially where possible to build trusting relationships, so staff feel comfortable to approach me and discuss matters when needed. At home, I am also a mum to two young and very energetic kids.
What are the first three words you think of when you hear the word ‘diversity’?
Opportunity, perspective and inclusion
What do you think it will take to develop truly diverse thinking within the legal industry?
To truly embrace diversity, change must begin at the top to filter down throughout the industry. Law is historically conservative and male-dominated at the partnership level, so to truly foster diverse thinking it needs to start with the leaders in the profession. Further the traditional legal structure and framework need to evolve to support flexibility and accommodate family life. By creating a more adaptable work environment, the industry will encourage women to enter (and remain) in the profession after having children.
What was your main driver to enter the legal industry?
I believed a law degree would open doors to various fields, plus provide the ability and credibility to drive positive change. I considered the skills obtained through a legal career were highly transferable, which I hoped would allow me to influence and improve practices across many industries.
