Kylie is a Legal Practitioner Director at VAJ Byrne & Co Lawyers.

Without mentioning your job title, how would you describe what it is you do now (whether at home, work, in the community, etc.)?

Manage and streamline regional legal practice and train a new generation of legal superstars, coach them to be capable and ethical practitioners and find work life balance. I am also mumma to a 5 and 2 year old which very much means I am not in control at home!

What are the first three words you think of when you hear the word ‘diversity’?

Perspective, opportunity, reality.

What do you think it will take to develop truly diverse thinking within the legal industry?

Diversity from the top down. The legal industry is still relatively conservative and upper management is ordinarily far from diverse. To get varied perspectives and new approaches, we need diverse, fresh voices at the decision making tables.

What was your main driver to enter the legal industry?

Making a difference. I wanted to help people and was passionate about social justice and equity particularly in relation to gender, sexuality and race. I saw that the legal system was one of the main ways to make and maintain these changes and bring accountability.
