Her story

Val is a Director at Elevate.

Without mentioning your job title, how would you describe what it is you do now (whether at home, work, in the community, etc.)?

I'm a connector, a strategist, and a builder. I bring people, ideas, and opportunities together, often before they realise they need each other. Whether at home, in business, or in the community, I spot potential and help it grow. I guide others through change with a practical edge and a human touch. I lead with intention, invest in relationships, and constantly look for ways to improve what already exists, whether it’s a team, a business model, or a person’s future. And I do it all while staying grounded, generous, and just a little bit cheeky when the moment calls for it.

What are the first three words you think of when you hear the word ‘diversity’?

Perspective, Opportunity, Belonging.

Perspective – because I value different lived experiences and know they shape better decisions.

Opportunity – because diversity isn’t just a value for me, it’s a way to open doors for others.

Belonging – because I believe diversity only works when people feel seen, heard, and safe to contribute.

What do you think it will take to develop truly diverse thinking within the legal industry?

We need to go well beyond surface-level gestures. It’s not enough to have a diversity policy or run a panel event once a year. For me, it starts with changing the systems that have historically shut people out – whether that’s how we recruit, who gets mentored, or how success is defined. We also need to create spaces where people feel safe to challenge the norm. Diverse thinking won’t thrive if people feel they have to water down their views just to fit in. I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is when someone with a different background or perspective feels heard – not just included, but genuinely valued. It also comes down to curiosity. We need more people willing to say, “I hadn’t thought of it that way – tell me more.” Diverse thinking grows when we stop assuming we have all the answers and start listening better. And finally, leadership matters. We need people at the top to show what this looks like in practice – not just what they say publicly, but in who they back, how they lead, and what they prioritise. That’s how culture shifts – not in one big moment, but in all the small, consistent choices we make.

What was your main driver to enter the legal industry?

I’ve never been a lawyer, but I’ve spent my entire career serving the legal profession. What drove me into the industry wasn’t a love of the law itself, but a deep respect for the people who practise it and the impact their work has on society. In my 20s, I started an eDiscovery business because I saw a gap – lawyers needed better tools, better support, and a more modern way of working. Since then, that same driver has guided me. Whether it’s building tech-enabled teams or growing a flexible resourcing business in my 60s, I’ve always focused on solving the problems behind the scenes so lawyers can focus on what they do best. Those of us who serve the legal profession have a responsibility to champion fairness, inclusion, and humanity in everything we do. That’s what pulled me into the industry – and it’s what keeps me here.
